Kybella (synthetic deoxycholic acid) was approved by the FDA on April 29, 2015, as the first non-surgical, injectable treatment for reducing moderate-to-severe fat below the chin (submental fat).
Developed from research starting in the 1950s and refined in the early 2000s, it works by cytolysis —destroying fat cell membranes to permanently remove them.
Key Historical Milestones Origins (1950s–2000s):
Researchers in France first studied compounds to dissolve fat. In the early 2000s, researchers including Dr. Derek H. Jones and Dr. Rotunda discovered that deoxycholic acid, a molecule naturally produced by the body to break down dietary fat, was responsible for this process.
Development & Trials: Over a decade of research, including 11 clinical trials and studies involving over 1,600 patients, demonstrated the safety and efficacy of injected deoxycholic acid.
FDA Approval (2015): Kybella was approved in April 2015 for submental contouring. Launch & Expansion: Following approval, the manufacturer (Kythera Biopharmaceuticals, later acquired by Allergan/AbbVie) initiated training programs for physicians in summer 2015.
Mechanism and Evolution Mechanism: Kybella is a cytolytic agent. When injected into submental fat, it destroys the fat cell membrane, causing it to break down. The body then processes the debris over several weeks.
Evolution: While designed for the "double chin," it has been used off-label to treat other small, localised fat deposits.
Alternative Names: Known as Belkyra in the UK.
Common Side Effects:
The side effects of Kybella are in line with the side effects of Aqualyx yet somewhat more extreme in nature. The swelling, reddening and bruising can be more present and take one to two weeks to subside.
Safety Standards & Disclaimer In 2026;
The ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) is strict on all injectable claims. At Fat Loss Injections Birmingham, all procedures require a full consultation to ascertain any contraindications which may deem an individual not suitable for treatment.
